چکیده

We present a new model for protoplanetary disc evolution. This model combines viscous evolution with photoevaporation of the disc, in a manner similar to Clarke, Gendrin & Sotomayor (2001). However in a companion paper (Alexander, Clarke & Pringle 2006a) we have shown that at late times such models must consider the effect of stellar radiation directly incident on the inner disc edge, and here we model the observational implications of this process. We find that the entire disc is dispersed on a timescale of order 10 5 yr after a disc lifetime of a few Myr, consistent with observations of T Tauri (TT) stars. We use a simple prescription to model the spectral energy distribution of the evolving disc, and demonstrate that the model is consistent with observational data across a wide range of wavelengths. We note also that the model predicts a short " inner hole " phase in the evolution of all TT discs, and make predictions for future observations at mid-infrared and millimetre wavelengths.

Giant Planet Migration, Disk Evolution, and the Origin of Transitional Disks

We present models of giant planet migration in evolving protoplanetary disks. Our disks evolve subject to viscous transport of angular momentum and photoevaporation, while planets undergo Type II migration. We use a Monte Carlo approach, running large numbers of models with a range in initial conditions. We find that relatively simple models can reproduce both the observed radial distribution o...

[Ne ii] emission line profiles from photoevaporative disc winds

I model profiles of the [Ne ii] forbidden emission line at 12.81μm, emitted by photoevaporative winds from discs around young, solar-mass stars. The predicted line luminosities (∼ 10L⊙) are consistent with recent data, and the line profiles vary significantly with disc inclination. Edge-on discs show broad (30–40 km s−1) double-peaked profiles, due to the rotation of the disc, while in face-on ...

Dust dynamics during protoplanetary disc clearing

We consider the dynamics of dust and gas during the clearing of protoplanetary discs. We work within the context of a photoevaporation/viscous model for the evolution of the gas disc, and use a two-fluid model to study the dynamics of dust grains as the gas disc is cleared. Small (. 10μm) grains remain well-coupled to the gas, but larger (∼ 1mm) grains are subject to inward migration from large...

Photoevaporation of protoplanetary discs I: hydrodynamic models

In this paper we consider the effect of the direct ionizing stellar radiation field on the evolution of protoplanetary discs subject to photoevaporative winds. We suggest that models which combine viscous evolution with photoevaporation of the disc (e.g. Clarke, Gendrin & Sotomayor 2001) incorrectly neglect the direct field after the inner disc has drained, at late times in the evolution. We co...

Radiation-Hydrodynamic Models of X-Ray & EUV Photoevaporating Protoplanetary Discs

We present the first radiation-hydrodynamic model of a protoplanetary disc irradiated with an X-EUV spectrum. In a model where the total ionizing luminosity is divided equally between X-ray and EUV luminosity, we find a photoevaporation rate of 1.4×10 M⊙yr , which is two orders of magnitude greater than the case of EUV photoevaporation alone. Thus it is clear that the X-rays are the dominant dr...
